The Chemists' Complete Sunscreen Review Guide

(90+ Sunscreens and Counting)

We’ve reached the third year of our 30 for 30 sunscreen challenge! Every year, we test 30 sunscreens in 30 days across our two faces (one chemist with dry skin and the other with oily, acne-prone skin). We initially created this challenge to see if we could help compare how these sunscreens applied, how they held up over time, and even how they washed off. With sunscreens under constant scrutiny, the ultimate goal was to promote healthy sunscreen habits and ultimately help those on the hunt for their next sunscreen holy grail.

If you’d like to see each sunscreen test in greater detail, please head to our Youtube, TikTok, and Instagram channels. Because this has become so popular, the chemists have expanded beyond the 30-for-30 challenge with ~90ish sunscreens tested under our belts. We’ve decided to compile all of the reviews across the years here, where you’ll find our summarized sentiments, our rating, and why.

NOTE: We’ve adjusted some of the ratings to recalibrate our preferences since our ratings can vary slightly year to year.

*To help readers learn more about products showcased in this challenge, we built out and organized these results in Shop My Shelf. We do receive a small commission for using our affiliate link. Thank you for feeding a chemist!

Grading Guidelines: We grade on a 10-point scale with 0 - shouldn't exist and 10 - perfection. Anything from a 6-10 is good! Because in the US we're punished by our limited filter system, most really good ones fall between a 7-8. International sunscreens with great textures can go up to a 8-9. We've rarely found the perfect sunscreen since formulation is just that hard, but there are a couple that are a no-brainer for us to suggest!

2025 30 for 30 Sunscreen Challenge Summary

  1. Prequel Solar Sun Barrier Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: A mineral sunscreen with UV booster butyloctyl salicylate.
    2. How it do?: The formula has a fresh break and does leave skin with a relatively clean finish. However, Gloria felt that this sunscreen was on the verge of pilling, which may not be good for those trying to layer any foundation on top. For our melanin-rich friends, this may leave skin with a hint of a white cast.
  2. Prequel Solar Shade Chemical Sunscreen SPF 46 PA++++: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: A chemical sunscreen fluid similar to La Roche Posay's Anthelios fluid
    2. How it do?: The formula absorbs quickly on skin however, it left skin with some residue, and the finish was pretty shiny. In fact, it was almost on the verge of being oily for Victoria. This could be a great option for dry skin types.
  3. Trader Joe's Daily Facial Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40: 7/10
    1. What it be?: A silicone suspension (similar to Supergoop's Unseen Sunscreen) that uses mineral filters. Trader Joe's also has a chemical filter version called Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40
    2. How it do?: If you don't know this already, we are not big fans of the silicone suspension texture because of the endlessly gliding texture and powdery finish. However, if you are a fan of this texture, this one would be a good mineral option at an incredibly affordable price point. The white cast potential was minimal.
  4. Anessa Mineral UV Mild Gel SPF 35 PA+++: 7/10
    1. What it be?: A mineral sunscreen from Shiseido's Asia-based brand, Anessa.
    2. How it do?: Great absorption, but definitely needs time to rub in. There's a high chance of a white cast with this one. Ultimately, the film is durable and the texture is comfortable, making this a great option for babies.
  5. Ciele Tint & Protect SPF 50+: 8/10
    1. What it be?: A high-coverage tinted sunscreen fluid in a dropper bottle (read: messy packaging).
    2. How it do?: This is a great, high-coverage option that needs some time to set, but eventually can leave skin with a more natural, less cakey finish. Overall, despite applying a sunscreen-amount of this product, skin still felt comfortable and not greasy. This will transfer on clothing, so keep that in mind when putting on your light-colored fit.
  6. Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion Mineral SPF 60+ Sunscreen: 5.5/10
    1. What it be?: A mineral fluid that contains UV booster butyloctyl salicylate
    2. How it do?: This felt like a pretty industrial mineral fluid. Like classic mineral formulas, it takes quite a long time to rub in, and there's a very apparent white cast even on Gloria's fair skin.
  7. Supergoop Glowscreen Soft Radiance Drops Mineral SPF 40: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: A thicker mineral fluid with tint.
    2. How it do?: The texture of this formula is quite nice and is comparable to its chemical filter counterpart - Glowscreen. However, the "glow" aspect of this on Victoria's skin wasn't quite right and made her look more oily than "dewy".
  8. Vacation Shake Shake Mineral Milk Face Sunscreen SPF 50: 9/10
    1. What it be?: A thin, mineral fluid with UV booster Ethylhexyl methoxycrylene
    2. How it do?: This texture is creamy but absorbs very quickly on skin. This sunscreen will need some time to rub in fully, but once set, it's comfortable and has a clean finish. This formula has a watermelon fragrance.
  9. Coppertone Every Tone Invisible Finish Face SPF 60+: 4/10
    1. What it be?: An anhydrous, silicone suspension with chemical filters.
    2. How it do?: This formula has moderate rub-in time and leaves skin with a slight sheen. However, amongst this category of sunscreens, the texture is pretty greasy. The formula has a banana fragrance.
  10. Banana Boat Light As Air SPF 50: 9.5/10
    1. What it be?: A water-resistant chemical sunscreen with a lotion texture.
    2. How it do?: This is an impressive sunscreen at a budget-friendly price point. The formula has a fresh break, absorbs relatively easily with no white cast. This will be a crowd pleaser and is now a staple in the chemists' arsenal of sunscreen.
  11. La Roche Posay Tone Up Rose SPF 50 PA++++: 9/10
    1. What it be?: A chemical filter lotion that uses non-US filters with
    2. How it do?: This lotion has a creamier texture that has a whitening effect common for Asia-based sunscreen. The film is comfortable to wear, but this will not be friendly to darker skin tones.
  12. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 SPF 50+: 3/10
    1. What it be?: A thicker chemical sunscreen lotion
    2. How it do?: Unfortunately, this texture is moisturizing but immediately pilled on Gloria's skin despite her not being prone to pilling. Not a good sign.
  13. The Ordinary UV Filters SPF 45 PA+++: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: A thinner lotion that uses US-approved chemical filters
    2. How it do?: This formula takes quite a long time to rub in and leaves skin with significant shine. The film is nourishing, but can feel heavy on oily skin
  14. Hawaiian Tropic Everyday Active Sport SPF 50: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: A thicker lotion with chemical filters
    2. How it do?: This sunscreen has a very wet application, which makes rub in time very long. Once this sunscreen finally sets, the film is robust and leaves skin with a dewy finish.
  15. Ultra Violette Future Screen SPF 50 PA++++: 7/10
    1. What it be?: A tinted mineral fluid with UV booster - Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene
    2. How it do?: This formula absorbs quickly and leaves a somewhat sheer tint. There is mild residue that leaves skin with a nourishing finish.
  16. First Aid Beauty Hydrating Sunscreen Milk SPF 45: 6/10
    1. What it be?: A chemical sunscreen fluid
    2. How it do?: This sunscreen has a creamy application that feels moisturizing on dry skin but can definitely feel greasy on oily skin. A pretty standard texture.
  17. Allies of Skin The One SPF 50: 4/10
    1. What it be?: An anhydrous, silicone suspension that uses chemical filters
    2. How it do?: Reiterating that this type of texture isn't our favorite, we will say this texture is quite unique in this category. The finish is more powdery and the skin is left very matte. However, give this sunscreen plenty of rub in to really create a uniform film.
  18. Paula's Choice RESIST Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50: 8.5/10
    1. What it be?: A chemical sunscreen fluid
    2. How it do?: The biggest gripe with this one is the packaging mismatch. We found this one hard to control when squeezing out. However, in terms of texture this formula rubs in quickly and leaves skin with a clean finish.
  19. Anua Heartleaf Silky Moisture Mild SPF 50+ (US version): 7/10
    1. What it be?: The US lotion with US-approved chemical filters
    2. How it do?: This is a solid texture that absorbs quickly and leaves a moisturizing finish. Although the film isn't as clean as their Korean version, it's still a good option for Kbeauty brand-turned-US sunscreen
  20. Anua Heartleaf Silky Moisture Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ (Korean version): 8/10
    1. What it be?: A thin lotion that uses Asia-based chemical filters
    2. How it do?: This creamy lotion absorbs quickly and leaves skin with a soft, powdery finish. In comparison to other Kbeauty sunscreens, this strikes a good balance of nourishing but clean afterfeel.
  21. d'Alba Piedmont Italian White Truffle Waterfall Essence Sunscreen SPF 50: 5/10
    1. What it be?: A Korean brand with a US-approved chemical sunscreen
    2. How it do?: Most Kbeauty brands that create a US-friendly sunscreen usually do ok, but unfortunately, this ended up having a lot of drag and heaviness.
  22. TirTir Mask Fit Cushion SPF 50+ PA+++: N/A (but 10/10 as a fair-skin foundation)
    1. What it be?: A Korean SPF cushion foundation with Asian chemical filters
    2. How it do?: As a cushion foundation for fair skin, this works great. As a sunscreen, there is no possible way to get enough sunscreen applied on face for full protection. Use this format for foundation, not for sunscreen.
  23. Biore UV Athlizm Skin Protect Mist SPF 50+ PA++++: 6.5/10
    1. What it be?: An Asia-based chemical filter face spray
    2. How it do?: This spray is unique in that the spray on skin is dense. (However, please remember to still rub in the film with your own hands.) This formula has high alcohol content, which isn't ideal when you're trying to spray directly onto face. The film is robust and definitely lives up to high sweat conditions, but the film is pretty greasy with high residue.
  24. Beauty of Joseon Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen: 7/10
    1. What it be?: A US-approved tinted mineral fluid that comes in many shades.
    2. How it do?: This fluid absorbs very quickly into skin and provides more of a sheer coverage. Unfortunately, this formula has a tendency to pill and isn't the most reapplication-friendly.
  25. Beauty of Joseon SPF 40 (US version): 7.5/10
    1. What it be?: A US-approved chemical lotion
    2. How it do?: This Korean-turned-US sunscreen has a light and creamy texture that absorbs quickly on skin and leaves a nourishing finish. The only downside is that the second application left a greasy finish on Victoria's oily skin.
  26. Beauty of Joseon Sun Aqua Fresh SPF 50+ PA++++
  27. Glow Recipe Dew Shield SPF 30
  28. Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++
  29. Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection SPF 50 PA++++
  30. Biore Aqua Rich (Cooling)

2024 30 for 30 Sunscreen Challenge Summary

  1. Kosas Dream Beam Tinted SPF 40 PA++++: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A high coverage tinted sunscreen with 80 minutes water resistance.

    2. How it do?: Solid! For a high coverage tint, the finish was still comfortable. Not too cakey or oily. Makeup wipe is needed to reapply.

  1. HaruHaru Black Rice Pure Mineral Relief Daily Sunscreen, SPF50+/PA++++: 3/10

    1. What it be?: A kbeauty mineral sunscreen.

    2. How it do?: This left a pretty unnatural shine and ended up being very dry on Gloria's dry skin.

  2. Tower28 SunnyDays SPF 30: 6/10

    1. What it be?: This is a high-coverage tinted sunscreen with a nourishing, cream finish.

    2. How it do?: This formula is very robust and held up over time. But affter 2 hours of wear, Victoria's skin started to feel pretty oily/greasy. Normal or dry skin types might have better luck!

  3. Innisfree Daily UV Defense Mineral SPF 45: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A kbeauty mineral sunscreen

    2. How it do?: Upon application, Gloria found this to have a light texture but definitely leaves a shinier finish than most. After 2 hours it held up well and surprisingly the drying after feel was pretty minimal. In the realm of mineral sunscreens, this is a good one!

  4. Trader Joe's Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40: 8/10

    1. What it be?: A Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Dupe - A classical silicone emulsion

    2. How it do?: Prefacing with I'm not thrilled by silicone-based sunscreens. Ultimately this is similar to any silicone sunscreen, same initial chemical smell and so. much. slip. during application. But surprisingly, once this had been absorbed, skin felt pretty clean. Ultimately the texture didn’t make me feel too oily, and the price is unbeatable at $9 for 1.7 fl oz.

  5. Supergoop Glow Screen SPF 40: 8/10

    1. What it be?: A sheer, tinted silicone lotion texture with optical powders to leave skin with a dewy finish.

    2. How it do?: A fter 2 hours of wear time it was still comfortable (even on a hot day) and Victoria didn't feel overly greasy. There wouldn't be any issues reapplying this one so it's a great option if you're ok with that dewy/glow/shine look.

  6. Purito Daily Soft Touch Sunscreen SPF 50: 6/10

    1. What it be?: A classic lotion sunscreen for face that claims heavy duty water resistance.

    2. How it do?: The texture wasn't anything the write home about.  Despite the claims, Gloria noticed that with a lot of sweat the sunscreen started to run and seemed to pool into the folds of skin. This will probably do just fine with normal sweating scenarios but maybe not so much for more intense workouts and saunas.

  7. Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Milk SPF 50: 9.5/10

    1. What it be?: A sunscreen fluid with a powdery silicone finish that claims water resistance & rub resistance.

    2. How it do?: We've also tested the traditional Anessa Fluid in the gold bottle and Gloria found this version to be even more comfortable. The sunscreen held up well to a rigorous workout. Overall a really solid formula!

  8. Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50 Facial Mist: 6/10

    1. What it be?: A chemical filter sunscreen face mist with alcohol.

    2. How it do?:  A couple notes! This formula has a solid amount of alcohol to keep the texture light. That means definitely keep your eyes closed if you spray directly to face. Another option is to spray onto hands then apply on face. Also, the spritz is a lot more concentrated, which means it may feel like you're covering a wide area of your face but in actuality, it's a lot more targeted. Just make sure you rub in the sunscreen well. The sunscreen definitely held up well in the sweat test. However, despite the light application, the after-feel still left skin feeling slightly greasy with some drag.

  9. Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50: 9/10

    1. What it be?: An asian chemical filter sunscreen with a watery lotion texture.

    2. How it do?: T his has a refreshing watery break that applies very easily. We wouldn't take the blue light protection claim too seriously - but SPF50+ and PA++++ is great! This was very comfortable on Gloria's dry skin! While it's not super moisturizing - it's definitely nice and non drying. A very solid choice for daily wear.

  10. Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel SPF 50: 0/10

    1. What it be?: An asian water gel chemical filter sunscreen

    2. How it do?: We were baffled by this sunscreen and we're fully aware of how long this formula has been around for and how popular it is. Our takeaways are the following: 1. We don't feel comfortable recommending this one simply because it's not easy to achieve a uniform film. Sunscreens are only as good as the uniform film it creates. 2. If you feel that this is the only sunscreen you're willing to wear, just rub in well. Very well. So so so well. Rub in this sunscreen to the point that the sunscreen has completely dried down and you no longer feel dampness or that watery break. Hope that helps!

  11. Supergoop Protect(tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF 50: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A tinted hybrid mineral with high coverage

    2. How it do?: This sunscreen texture felt pretty comparable to btoh the Kosas and Tower 28 tinted formulas. It did have a more nourishing finish but help up well and was comfortable to wear. This will need a makeup wipe to remove before reapplication.

  12. Naturium UV Reflect Antioxidant SPF 50: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A chemical sunscreen fluid

    2. How it do?: This UV fluid feels like a textbook sunscreen fluid. It absorbs quickly and leaves a silicone, powdery finish with some residue. It held up well throughout the day and wouldn't have any issues reapplying. However, probably by the third reapplication, this felt like it wanted to pill. Just something to keep in mind if you're relying on this sunscreen for a whole day of sun protection. If Victoria had to choose between the two Naturium sunscreens, she would pick the Dew Glow Screen. The texture is more lotion like but seemed to absorb better on her skin.

  13. Saie’s Slip Tint Mineral SPF 35: 4/10

    1. What it be?: A tinted mineral lotion with medium coverage

    2. How it do?: Victoria was surprised to find that this tinted coverage was somewhere more in the middle. Not as high coverage as the Kosas/Supergoop/Tower 28, but more than the sheer tinted like the Kate Somerville, Tatcha, and Murad City Defense. Unfortunately, the product she had smelled like one of the oils had gone rancid. It could just have been bad luck on her part. More importantly, this texture didn’t quite work for Victoria's oily skin. After two hours of wear it felt like it was sliding around and didn’t want to absorb. Maybe you’ll have much better luck because the amount of coverage was appreciated and did provide a more natural finish.

  14. Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection SPF 60+: 6/10

    1. What it be?: A japanese chemical sunscreen with 80 minute water resistance

    2. How it do?: This sunscreen has a classic silicone texture with a lot of slip and a powdery finish. However, compared to Anessa, this definitely left more of a film & nourishing finish. The overall texture was appreciated and definitely a worthy sunscreen for dry skin types. But, it didn't hold up as well when it came to sweat resistance, despite its positioning.

  15. La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMUNE400 Fluide Invisible: 10/10

    1. What it be?: A non-US chemical sunscreen fluid

    2. How it do?: We LOVED how fast this sets. It's really helpful in promoting wearing the correct amount of sunscreen as opposed to those formulas that just feel like rubbing forevvverrr. The texture is also very "neutral" - it's not drying or moisturizing - pretty good for all skin types. This definitely lives up to the hype! European friends - y'all are super lucky

  16. Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Sun Serum SPF50+: 8.5/10

    1. What it be?: A kbeauty chemical sunscreen lotion

    2. How it do?: This has a refreshing watery break that absorbs fairly quickly. This does leave skin with a bit of shine but it's tolerable. Overall this had some wear but the texture was appreciated and comfortable. We consider this a great neutral texture. Not too powdery, doesn't have too much slip, neither too moisturizing or too drying. A great one to consider for all skin types!

  17. Tatcha the Silk Sunscreen SPF 50: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A sheer, tinted, mineral sunscreen fluid

    2. How it do?:   This felt a lot like Victoria's beloved Murad City Defense. It wears well, and felt comfortable on Victoria's oily skin. Buttt the price tag is just a bit hard to swallow.

  18. Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+: 7.5/10

    1. What it be?: A sheer, tinted, mineral sunscreen fluid with essential oil fragrance

    2. How it do?: This felt comfortable on Victoria's oily skin with no white cast. It held up quite well through hot yoga as well. This is another one that's comparable to the Tatcha & Murad Tinted Minerals. Bonus that this one is ~$20 than the other two so a definite win!

  19. Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection SPF 50 Stick: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A baby mineral stick sunscreen

    2. How it do?: This stick has a great glidey, layerable texture that held up well with sweat. It does have a white cast like almost all other baby formulas - but really isn't the worst offender. Note that with sunscreen sticks, you're very likely underapplying. More coats! *PSA - sunscreen can play a role in your baby's sun protection kit especially for those exposed little feetsies, but don't forget your UPF gear + keep them in shaded areas!

  20. Blue Lizard Baby SPF50+ Mineral Stick: 3/10

    1. What it be?: A baby mineral stick sunscreen

    2. How it do?: This stick is noticeably less spreadable and glidey than the Aveeno baby stick. It's pretty hard to get an even, solid film with this product. Sadly... this isn't quite what we're looking for in a baby sunscreen

  21. ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica Ultralight Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+: 6/10

    1. What it be?: A mineral fluid sunscreen with fragrance

    2. How it do?: This is a fluid mineral sunscreen that feels pretty close to La Roche Posays' Anthelios Mineral Fluid. The formula absorbs quickly and leaves only a slight residue on skin. Keep in mind this sunscreen does have a powdery-scented fragrance. This formula doesn't show up that well on the UV camera but seems to hold up ok. Unfortunately, over time this formula started to run into Victoria's eyes and did bother her over time. However, this is a running theme (pun intended) with all thin mineral fluids for her. This might not be the same experience for others. If you enjoy these sunscreens, this could be another one to consider.

  22. DRMTLGY Univeral Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46: 8/10

    1. What it be?: A tinted hybrid mineral sunscreen with sheer coverage

    2. How it do?:  This is a tinted hybrid mineral sunscreen that provides sheer coverage and had a pretty long rub in time. However, once rubbed in this texture was quite nice. It absorbs well, feels comfortable on skin, and left skin with a pretty natural finish. Overall this sunscreen held up well and Gloria didn't find it drying for skin (which happens a lot with anything mineral). She wouldn't have any qualms about using this tinted again.

  23. Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen Sensitive SPF 50+: 6/10

    1. What it be?: An affordable, classic mineral sunscreen.

    2. How it do?: This formula has some of the classic issues - long application time, residue, and faint white cast. But, it didn’t dry out Gloria’s skin, help up well, and...in this economy is very reasonably priced. Like $17 for 5oz. reasonable. Strong redeemable qualities that make this an affordable, dependable mineral sunscreen for those with more fair skin looking in this category.

  24. Black Girl Sunscreen Make it Hybrid SPF 50: 0/10

    1. What it be?: A hybrid mineral SPF 50

    2. How it do?: Ok this was a sad day for us. We've tried other sunscreens in their lineup and didn't face the same issue but this one refused to absorb. So after trying many minutes to rub all of it in, the formula sadly decided to pill profusely on Gloria's skin. It pains us to give this rating, but when you can't apply enough and the sunscreen can't set up a proper film, we can't recommend this as a sunscreen option. Skin is personal after all so maybe some of you have better luck.

  25. Biore Aqua Rich SPF 50 US Version: 8.5/10

    1. What it be?: A US chemical filter gel cream texture.

    2. How it do?: Victoria here! I’ve been a long-time Biore Aqua Rich Lover and heard some reviews of the recent US version. So to do a good comparison, let’s do a split-face comparison of the two. Honestly, it was pretty surprising to find that the US version still retained that signature watery break. I probably had some pretty low expectations going into this, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this sunscreen to be pretty comparable. Yes, it did have a more filmy, nourishing finish but in the grand scheme of US sunscreens, it’s not too shabby. For a US sunscreen, it’s solid. If I only could use this version I wouldn’t be mad. Also, happy to know Biore provides a version that you don’t have to purchase through less straightforward channels.

  26. Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick SPF 50: 7/10 (for a stick)

    1. What it be?: A kbeauty chemical filter sunscreen stick

    2. How it do?: Sunscreen sticks are challenging for us to talk about. We totally get the convenience of quickly swiping this on whether you’re on the go or trying to reapply, but it’s really difficult to be sure you’re getting enough. In fact, it’s so challenging we had to use a scale! Despite needing 4 coats, Victoria didn’t look shiny and it was surprisingly not that gross of a feel on skin. Ultimately sunscreen sticks are just going to be a tough category to apply enough of. But in this category, this is a really good formula. For those wanting to use sunscreen sticks as your main sunscreen, aim for 3 coats.

  27. Elta MD Tinted Sunscreen SPF 46: 3/10

    1. What it be?: A sheer, tinted hybrid sunscreen

    2. How it do?: This tinted formula took a surprisingly long time to rub in and absorb. While the formula held up well, if not careful Gloria could get this formula to pill. This formula felt comparable to the DRMTLGY tinted and ultimately we would choose DRMTLGY over this one. Not the greatest initial application and pilling tendency is too high.

  28. Baby Bum Mineral Lotion SPF 50: 8/10 (for babies)

    1. What it be?: A non-nano zinc oxide mineral sunscreen.

    2. How it do?:  We both crossed a crazy milestone in the past year, which means I guess we have to look at sunscreens for babies. In general, baby skin is fresh, new, and oh so volatile and potentially sensitive. That means, baby sunscreen formulas will be non-nano mineral formulas so here we must embrace the WHITE CAST. As an adult human, this will have a lot of things you'll hate in a sunscreen. It will leave a ghostly white cast that takes forever to to rub in. However, once absorbed it leaves a nourishing finish but not dreadfully greasy. So in the realm of baby sunscreens, this formula held up really well in a sweat test and isn't the greasiest of the bunch.

  29. Sun Bum Face Lotion SPF 50: 6/10

    1. What it be?: Drugstore accessible chemical lotion.

    2. How it do?: If I could provide a textbook example of a chemical sunscreen lotion, this would be a good one. There's honestly nothing too surprising both good or bad about this texture. After working out, this held up just fine so it's a reliable, drug store sunscreen you can snag. But wait! Funny story, this face lotion formula is actually incredibly similar to their regular sunscreen texture at half the cost per ounce. So texture-wise, we'd rate this a 6/10 but I ended up downgrading this one because ultimately I'd recommend to just go buy the bigger bottle of the non-face Sun Bum SPF 50 Lotion. It's way cheaper for pretty much the exact same formula.

2023 30 for 30 Sunscreen Challenge Summary

  1. Allie Gel UV EX SPF 50+ PA++++: 7/10

    1. What it be?: An international hybrid filter system with mineral zinc oxide!

    2. How it do?: Decent! For an asian sunscreen, we’ve tested better textures. This left a subtle white cast on me, however for a hybrid sunscreen it’s still pretty good!

  2. Nivea UV Deep Protect & Care Gel SPF 50 PA++++: 8/10

    1. What it be?: An international chemical filter system with Uvinul A+, Tinosorb S, and Octinoxate

    2. How it do?: Solid! Wear is pretty good, texture was light and reapplying wasn’t as gross as some despite sweating.

  3. Kroger’s Dupe of Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40: 4/10

    1. What it be?: A very silicone heavy chemical sunscreen

    2. How it do?: Texture alone, this formula sits pretty heavy on face. The dupe is definitely not better than the real one. Not ideal.

  4. EVY’s Daily Defence Mousse SPF 50: 7/10

    1. What it be?: An aerosolized mousse using chemical sunscreen filters

    2. How it do?: Texture alone, this formula is more nourishing which was fine for Gloria’s dry skin. Gloria tried this in two different climates (more humid vs. more dry) and found that they hold up differently. A good reminder to stay on top of reapplication.

  5. Aveeno’s Protect + Hydrate Sunscreen for Face SPF 50 (80 min sweat + water resistance): 0/10

    1. What it be?: A classic lotion texture with chemical filters

    2. How it do?: The formula had Gloria freaking out because it never seemed to absorb. It also started running into her eye and it wasn’t fun!

  6. La Roche Posay’s Anthelios Daily Lotion Sunscreen SPF 70: 9/10

    1. What it be?: A classic lotion texture with chemical filters that also included niacinamide and antioxidants

    2. How it do?: For a higher SPF, this texture was surprisingly nice! The finish was nourishing but clean and the overall texture was pleasant enough that reapplying wasn’t yucky.

  7. Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Mist SPF 50 PA++++: 3/10

    1. What it be?: An international filter system in spray formula

    2. How it do?: Texture alone, this formula is pretty good. But under our UV camera it was clear that the dry down happened so quickly that the coverage didn’t seem to be very even. As a safeguard, we’d recommend applying more and taking more time to rub in.

  8. Vacation Lotion Classic Sunscreen SPF 50 (80 min water resistance): 7/10

    1. What it be?: A classic lotion texture with chemical filters

    2. How it do?: Held up well and for a formula with water resistance, this texture is really nice.

  9. Live Tinted Hueguard 3-in-1 Broadspectrum Mineral SPF 30: 6/10

    1. What it be?: A tinted non-nano zinc lotion

    2. How it do?: Minerals are tough and non-nano minerals are even tougher. The texture has some heaviness to it so it’s not the best mineral texture out there. Coverage is on the minimal side and blended fine with Victoria’s more tan complexion.

  10. MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30: 6/10 (for a foundation)

    1. What it be?: A very mineral-filter-heavy hybrid SPF fluid

    2. How it do?: Functional for sunscreen protection but will definitely be very high coverage. This will require a makeup wipe for reapplication.

  11. Australian Gold Botanical Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50: 4/10

    1. What it be?: A classical lotion using purely mineral filters

    2. How it do?: There were two issues with this one: 1. This is a highly pigmented sunscreen which made us want to apply much less than the ideal sunscreen amount. 2. This formula can be drying (even Victoria’s oily skin noticed it).

  12. Krave Beauty Beet the Sun SPF 40 PA+++: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A classical lotion using US chemical filters

    2. How it do?: A pretty traditional texture that didn’t make Victoria’s oily skin too shiny. Kudos to UVA PA testing.

  13. Naturium Dew Glow Moisturizer SPF 50: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A classical light lotion texture using US chemical filters

    2. How it do?: This is a pretty solid SPF 50 that absorbed well.

  14. Biore UV Aqua Rich Protection Lotion SPF 50+ PA++++: 8/10

    1. What it be?: A classical light lotion texture using US chemical filters

    2. How it do?: This is a pretty solid SPF 50 that absorbed well.

  15. Cetaphil Sheer 100% Mineral Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 50: 5/10

    1. What it be?: A very fluid mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreen

    2. How it do?: We couldn't speak to the wear time of this one because minerals just don't show up very well on the UV camera. But we can definitely say this definitely comes with a white cast and seems to get into the eyes. Not the best mineral we've tried.

  16. Cay Skin Isle Glow Tinted Face Moisturizer SPF 45: 7/10

    1. What it be?: A classic lotion texture with US chemical filters

    2. How it do?: Classic chemical sunscreen texture that wasn't heavily pigmented (consider it as mild-medium coverage). Well-balanced all around.

  17. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50: 5/10

    1. What it be?: A heavily pigmented tinted mineral sunscreen.

    2. How it do?: While the tint was compatible and coverage held up over time, the formula sits heavier on the face and has some drag. Reapplying wasn't that fun and we definitely recommend double cleansing to completely clean.

  18. Biore Athlizm Sunburn Protect Milk SPF 50+ PA++++: 8/10

    1. What it be?: Biore's Athlizm line (the red bottle line) is positioned to be used specifically for sport performance - think strong sweat and rub-resistant claims! This one in particular is a hybrid fluid formula.

    2. How it do?: We took 2 stars off for the longer rub in time. Once it sets, the finish is light, clean, but not drying. It held up really admirably through a heavy sweat sesh, and was still pretty intact until toweled off. Despite Gloria's intense sweat sesh, it didn't run into her eyes or cause any irritation. Solid performer!

  19. Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Protect Milk SPF 50+ PA++++: 7.5/10

    1. What it be?: Anessa's one of Shiseido's brands that produce some of the most popular, iconic sunscreens in Asia. This is very similar to the Athlizm, both a hybrid fluid with bold sweat, water, rub resistant claims.

    2. How it do?: The performance is really good against a tougher workout out with mas sweat. That said, the initial play time is also on the long side much like the Athlizm. Gloria personally preferred the Athlizm since the Anessa formula's more on the drying side for her skin, but those with oily skin may prefer the Anessa.

  20. Vacation Classic Whip SPF 30 Sunscreen Mousse: 7/10

    1. What it be?: SPF30 aerosol formula that's 80 min water resistant

    2. How it do?: This texture is surprisingly nice! It rubbed in fairly fast, is nourishing, but not overly greasy or tacky. If you're considering getting this for more casual outings, this is a solid choice but if you see the water-resistant claim and want to use it for more sporty occasions, this one did NOT hold up well during a workout. This has a tendency to run into eyes so we'd also give it a 5/10 for active use.

  21. Murad's Correct & Protect SPF 45 PA+++ Serum: 5/10

    1. What it be?: A mineral SPF45 formula in a dropper bottle

    2. How it do?: As far as a mineral formula goes, it's pretty good. This one is not drying (even on Gloria's dry skin), and the finish is on the oily side without being too gross or greasy. But it does leave skin with a REALLY shiny finish that lasted the whole 2 hours. The shine + the dropper bottle being a pretty meh applicator = a middling 5/10. Murad's City Skin Age Defense is a much better formula in our experience.

  22. La Roche Posay's Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen SPF 60: 7.5/10

    1. What it be?: One of LRP's classic fluid with US chemical filters rated for 80 min water resistance

    2. How it do?: This is a surprising fluid favorite especially when it's going head to head against sunscreens like Anessa and Biore Athlizm. Rub in time was quick, film sets up well, and this was put through a sweat torture test with lots of towel downs. Minus a start because it was on the drying side for Gloria.

  23. Neogen's Airy Sunscreen SPF 50: *Due to the recent FDA violation of sales through main channels and flag as an OTC product, we no longer recommend this sunscreen. Such is the complicated world of sunscreen regulation.

    1. What it be? Though this is from a Kbeauty brand, their Airy Sunscreen uses US filters

    2. How it do? Super fast rub in down to a pretty clean, very lightly filmy finish. Though this has oil-absorbing silica, it wasn't actually super drying even on Gloria's dry skin. The reapplication is beautiful.

  24. CosRX's Vitamin E Vitalizing SPF50: 6.5/10

    1. What it be? Though this is from a Kbeauty brand, this suncreen uses US filters

    2. How it do?: This texture is more of a traditional standard lotion. Slightly flimy, slightly greasy, but quick absorption. Wear held up well.

  25. Eucerin Age Defense SPF 50: 6/10

    1. What it be?: US drugstore brand with US chemical filters

    2. How it do?: This one definitely has that classic sunscreen lotion texture - but not necessarily in a bad way. It's creamy, applies a bit thicker than some would prefer but dry skin types probably won't mind. It wears well, and holds up throughout the day. It does get a bit tacky when re-applying though. Decent work horse formula that does the job at a good price point.

  26. Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++: 9.5/10

    1. What it be?: An Asia chemical filter system that has a water lotion texture.

    2. How it do?: Texture alone, this formula rubs in quickly and doesn't leave skin with a greasy finish. Wear time and wash off were both a ✅ ✅. A really easy and and long time favorite of ours!

  27. Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++: 6/10

    1. What it be?: An Asia chemical filter system with a light fluid lotion consistency.

    2. How it do?: The playtime was unusually long for an Asia sunscreen and once rubbed in there was definitely a pretty shiny after finish. Despite that, over time skin didn't feel heavy and the shine eventually went away. Not the worst texture, but not the best texture we've tried

  28. Beauty of Joseon Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++: 7.8/10

    1. What it be?: An Asia chemical filter system that has a pretty light lotion texture.

    2. How it do?: Texture alone, this formula had a slightly longer playtime but finished really clean on skin. Wear time and wash off were both a ✅ ✅. We bumped it down a couple of points because Gloria found that the formula felt slightly drying on skin over time despite a great texture. Definitely a good one for oily skin types.

  29. Then I Met You Essence Light Sunscreen SPF 50: 8/10

    1. What it be?: A light lotion texture that uses US chemical sunscreen filters.

    2. How it do?: Solid texture for a US chemical filter system. It absorbed quickly and I didn't notice any greasiness even through a sweat session. Wear and wash-off all ✅✅.

  30. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40: 5/10

    1. What it be?: A chemical sunscreen filter system in a silicone emulsions. (Note: We're generally not fans of these kinds of textures.)

    2. How it do?: 5/10 - Like all silicone emulsions, with so much slip, this formula has a much longer playtime and comes with that classic silicone residue. Over time the formula didn't feel as heavy and the residue did diminish somewhat. This is definitely a better texture in the silicone emulsion family and for those that don't mind this texture, it can be helpful for those that don't want any shine or tack. We were pretty curious about wash-off since this formula is more silicone heavy, but it actually did just fine with our Blank Slate cleanser. Just don't be like Victoria and forget to wash around your hairline!
